USCBC has signed on to a letter sent to the House leadership regarding H.R. 275, the "Global Online Freedom Act of 2007." The bill, introduced by Rep. Chris Smith (R-NJ), seeks to identify countries that limit access to the Internet and to restrict US information companies' operations in those countries. It was approved by the House Foreign Affairs Committee in October 2007 and has also been referred to the House Energy & Commerce and House Judiciary committees. This referral time has since expired, therefore the bill could be called up for consideration by the full House of Representatives at any time. The letter raises concerns about certain aspects of the bill that could limit the legitimate business activities of US companies abroad, such as normal, internal communications with employees and customers. China is specifically identified as an Internet-restricting country in the bill's text.
