Project Description: Development Gateway Forum 2005

The year 2005 is being called the "Year of Development," as the international community renews the commitment it made five years ago to achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). This is also the year in which the number of Internet users around the world will top 1 billion—with users in developing countries overtaking those in the developed world for the first time. The Development Gateway Forum, which will be held September 16-17 in Beijing, will discuss how these two trends can intersect to improve people's lives worldwide. Where better to make such connections than in China, as Chinese Internet usage is crossing the 100 million mark and the economy and society are experiencing a renaissance?

The Forum, devoted to "Information Technology and Collaborative Development," will bring together leaders of China's information technology and development sectors with their peers from across sectors and around the world. Discussions will cover strategies at work in China and other countries, policies that produce results, successful applications, and new innovations. With 400 participants including leading figures from China and around the world, the Forum is expected to underscore the potential of ICT to help advance the MDGs and improve peoples' lives worldwide. The Development Gateway Award will be presented at a ceremony on the evening of September 16. The $100,000 prize will reward outstanding achievement in using information technology to improve people's lives in developing countries.

Related sponsorships offer opportunities to demonstrate corporate social responsibility, raise profile, and network with leaders.

The Forum is cosponsored by the World Bank.
