US companies participate in a broad range of programs that benefit the people of China and strengthen the bonds of US-China friendship beyond the commercial realm. Opportunities aims to help companies identify programs that merit their assistance. The materials contained in Opportunities are condensed. US Institution: The China Education Initiative (CEI)

Project Description: To improve educational opportunities in low-income Chinese communities

CEI is a US nonprofit organization that addresses educational inequality in low-income Chinese communities. The organization is recruiting graduates from top PRC and US universities to serve together in one- or two-year teaching posts at understaffed schools in low-income communities in China.

CEI seeks funding from corporations and individuals interested in helping to support its teaching fellows; it is also looking for companies that can develop its volunteers' professional and leadership potential.

US Institution: Washington Yu Ying Public Charter School

Project Description: To provide elementary school students in Washington, DC, a Mandarin Chinese immersion program

Washington Yu Ying Public Charter School, which enrolls students from pre-kindergarten through second grade, seeks funding to expand its facilities one grade per year until eighth grade. The school received a Foreign Language Assistance Program grant from the US Department of Education and Candidate Status from the International Baccalaureate Organization.

The school will hold an auction fundraiser on June 6, 2010. To donate an item or sponsor the event, contact the Yu Ying Gala Auction organizers by April 30.

US Institution: The Yao Ming Foundation; The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (MFA Houston)

Project Description: To raise funds for the Ting Tsung and Wei Fong Chao Arts of China Gallery at the MFA Houston

The Yao Ming Foundation was established in June 2008 by Houston Rockets star Yao Ming in response to the May 2008 Sichuan earthquake. The foundation has partnered with the China Youth Development Foundation to rebuild schools destroyed by the earthquake. The foundation also supports improvements to rural schools throughout China, as well as other educational opportunities in the United States and China.

In partnership with MFA Houston, the Yao Ming Foundation is hosting a gala on March 28, 2010 to fund the construction of the Ting Tsung and Wei Fong Chao Arts of China Gallery. The gallery will introduce Chinese art and culture to millions of children, youth, and adults who visit the museum each year. Sponsorship opportunities for the gala are still available.
